C1: Automobile Service Consultant

ASE offers a series of certifications to help automotive service professional’s fine tune their skills and enhance their careers.  In the automotive service industry education and certifications are necessary to ensure career advancement.  This also proves the competency of a shop to its customers and gives customers the peace of mind that their vehicle is in good hands.

The goal is to improve the quality of vehicle service from the bays to the front counter. For a shop to run smoothly and truly prosper, those who come in contact with customers must be as proficient at their job as the technicians who service the vehicles. C1 certification is designed to measure the knowledge of automotive service consultants, also known as service advisors.  The exam tests for proficiency in the areas of communications, product knowledge, sales skills and shop operations.

C1-service-consultantTo become C1 certified, service consultants are required to pass the exam and show proof of two years of on the job experience as a service consultant. Once they are certified they receive credentials and the Blue Seal insignia. Service consultants must be retested every five years in order to remain certified. As a C1 certified service consultant you will be on your way to achieving new heights in your career. Many consultants who are ASE certified own and operate their own shop.

Communications#1 - Communications
Your goal to pass: 70%
Average Score: 90.3%

As an automobile service consultant, your primary job will be to listen to and understand the customer’s complaint of a problem, take the vehicle on a road test, make a judgment about the repairs that are necessary and communicate the problem to the technician.  This quiz covers customer relations (on the phone and face-to-face) and internal relations (communicating with others in your shop).

Product Knowledge#2 - Product Knowledge

Average Score: 72.6%

This quiz will test your knowledge of the various vehicle systems: engine, drive train, chassis and body, heating and air conditioning, safety restraints, accessories and the electrical system.  It will also cover scheduled maintenance, warranty, service contracts, recalls and technical service bulletins (TSBs).  This quiz will also evaluate your sales skills and the importance of using information printed or stamped in various places of the vehicle to expedite repairs and recommend vehicle maintenance.

Sales Skills#3 – Sales Skills

This quiz takes communication skills to the next level.  This quiz will cover prioritizing service needs of a vehicle, addressing all customer needs and concerns, clearly communicating with customers, overcoming objections and customer disputes and the importance of “asking for the job.”

Shop Operations #4 – Shop Operations

Average Score: 71.4%

With your on the job experience, you probably have a great deal of knowledge about shop operations.  This quiz deals with some of the things you might not know such as work flow, shop management programs, follow up calls to customers and comeback and repeat repair policies.
