AVI and Dave Hobbs explain the controller area network (C.A.N.) bus interface and GM LAN system to help you pass the computerized powertrain controls section of the ASE A8 and L1 tests.

The controller area network (C.A.N.) bus interface is an important part of the computerized powertrain controls section of the ASE A8 and L1 tests. If you do not completely understand CAN data and the GM LAN system, you should know it before you step through ASE’s test center doors. AVI and Dave Hobbs CAN guide you through the functions, features and diagnostics of the CAN system.

Dave will start with an explanation of CAN data, how it works and why it is necessary. He will show you how to identify vehicles that are equipped with CAN and how the system differs from others. Dave provides schematics to help you learn how the system works.

This program explains functional diagnostics and defines buzzwords such as “Virtual Networks,” “Learned Nodes” and “Buddy Systems.” Dave defines code suffixes and system numbers and shows you how they can help with diagnostics. He also explains what a “CANDI” (Controller Area Network Diagnostic Interface) module is used for. Dave packs a huge amount of information into this 1.25 hour seminar.

In order to pass the ASE A6 or L1 Certification exam it is essential that you understand how to read and interpret schematic diagrams. Instructor Peter Orlando is an expert at electronics and in this program he will help you comprehend electrical schematics using real world case studies.

Reading schematics involves understanding the meaning of different symbols. This class will explain you what the symbols demonstrate and whether all manufacturers use the same symbols. Peter shows you how to find components and connectors with location codes. He explains how to trace circuits using OEM and after-market schematics and provides a 3-step power diagnostic process.

You will learn the difference between an open, a short and a ground. Peter will also explain the difference between a circuit diagram, a schematic diagram and a wiring diagram and why you should ALWAYS know which way the current is flowing. If you want to pass the A6 or L1 exam, this class is a must.

Bill explains what peak vacuum is and how to use peak vacuum and vacuum transducers for diagnostics. He shows you how to compare cylinder bank to cylinder bank using vacuum waveforms and how to do cylinder leak down tests. Bill also reveals four things you MUST KNOW for cranking compression tests and tips on compression testing with your scope.

This program shows you how to use dynamic compression testing and testing procedures using idle compression. Bill explains how oil leaks affect engine performance and provides case studies for cam sensor and crank sensor diagnostics. This class will give you the information you need to help you pass the ASE tests and use vacuum waveforms as a testing procedure.

If you had to think about this question for a minute then AVI has the answer for you. This class is not an overview of OBD-II. It is a study of Honda and Acura vehicles and their unique parts and monitors.

Craig Van Batenburg of ACDC helps you save valuable time by explaining how to put 2 trip and 3 trip monitors into one single monitor. He also goes over the EVAP monitor and the O2 sensor monitor with Zirconia and Heated O2. This class will show you how Honda catalyst monitors are different and how their sensors work and gives you a Great tip on using the injector pulse width, especially on those cars with NO-Codes.

Fuel system monitor, what the PCM looks at and how Honda uses 02 sensors for more than just fuel monitoring

Factory & generic scanner testing data-what to look out for
Manual covers 1996-2005 Honda and Acura OBD II Models with help sections, common failure problems, suspension & brakes

Many emission and driveability problems can only be repaired with a software update. Although many shops do not get into flashing/reprogramming, ASE thought it was important enough to include on the exam, so it is a procedure that you need to know if you are planning on becoming certified.

In this program, Instructor John Thornton explains what J2534 pass thru is, how it works and what it can and cannot do. He tells you why it is important information to know even if you are not planning on doing reflashing. John shows you the tools you will need and the problems you can fix with these tools.

You will also learn how to use OEM websites to find reflash information, the profits that can be made with a J2534 tool and where to find J2534 tools. This program has over 2 ½ hours of hands-on demonstrations on GM, Ford, Chrysler and Toyota.

Most Ford vehicles are equipped with Electronic Returnless Fuel (ERF) systems, which are tough to diagnose. You will also need to be familiar with this type of system to become ASE A8 or L1 Certified. AVI and Jim Wilson will give you the information you need to know to pass the fuel system portion of the A8 exam and diagnose and repair Ford ERF systems.

In this program Jim explains why ERF systems are tough to diagnose and why conventional fuel system testing does not work. He covers the components, how to identify ERF systems, the different types of ERF systems, how they work and how to diagnose them.

This course explains how to check the fuel pump duty cycle command and how to use the duty cycle to determine fuel pressure. John also shows you how to test the pressure transducer and how to locate and test the fuel pump driver module. This course is full of great tips to help you diagnose ERF systems.

He explains how things like high mileage, dirty injectors, lazy O2 sensors or coking affect short term fuel trim. He also shows you how and what sensors affect fuel trim and how the catalytic converter is involved.

Jim tells you where proper fuel trim values should be and where to find all the data to get the job done. This program also provides live data, setups, lots of tips and great tech logic. This class will not only help you pass the exams, it will also help you improve your customer’s engine power and fuel economy.

If you are preparing for an ASE test, you will need to be familiar with OBD I and OBD II computer control systems. Although this program deals with Honda and Acura vehicles, the concepts you will learn will help you better understand computerized powertrain controls and fuel injection.

With this program AVI and Craig Van Batenburg of ACDC will help you understand the diagnostics of fuel injection systems on Honda and Acura vehicles (1973-1995) with OBD1 systems. This class explains how to check models with no data stream and how speed density systems work. Craig shows you which sensor to start with and provides a great tip on using a DVOM to check intake manifold PSI on early model data streams. He also explains what computer failsafe really means.
