J2534 Vehicle Flashing

Many emission and driveability problems can only be repaired with a software update. Although many shops do not get into flashing/reprogramming, ASE thought it was important enough to include on the exam, so it is a procedure that you need to know if you are planning on becoming certified.

In this program, Instructor John Thornton explains what J2534 pass thru is, how it works and what it can and cannot do. He tells you why it is important information to know even if you are not planning on doing reflashing. John shows you the tools you will need and the problems you can fix with these tools.

You will also learn how to use OEM websites to find reflash information, the profits that can be made with a J2534 tool and where to find J2534 tools. This program has over 2 ½ hours of hands-on demonstrations on GM, Ford, Chrysler and Toyota.

4/5 Gas Analysis

Analyzing exhaust gasses using 4 & 5 gas analyzers is something you will definitely need to be familiar with if you are preparing to take an ASE test. In this program instructor Bill Fulton explains how to use 4 & 5 gas analyzers to test exhaust gasses and as a diagnostic tool.

Bill covers NOX readings, why they are important and how to quickly identify problems. He explains the effect of air/fuel ratios on HC, CO and O2. He will show you how to use O2 sensor waveforms to verify that the cat is being fed and why you can’t always count on catalytic temperature readings.

This class will show you what to do before replacing the catalytic converter and give you 12 points on NOX testing. You will also learn how to cut your diagnostic time with the Bill Fulton MERLIN chart (Mechanical, Electrical, Rich, Lean, Injector, Normal)
