While all certification testing will still take place at secure, proctored Test Centers, the new, enhanced CBT program will include features such as:

Immediate test results

Testing offered during eight months of each year

Choice of testing dates and times

More than 300 Test Centers across the US and Canada

All ASE tests, both certification and recertification

Same price as ASE’s written testing

This video gives you an overview of what the process will be like:

Take computer-based testing for a “test drive” today!

Try the free online demo to experience the look and feel of an ASE computer-based test, just as it will be delivered at the CBT Test Center.

The demonstration presents sample questions from a variety of ASE tests to allow you to practice the navigational controls of the computer-based tests, just as they will appear at the Test Centers. The demo is not an in-depth test of your automotive service knowledge, so the results are not scored.

In case you haven’t heard, ASE has introduced a new addition to the Automobile Technician certification test series—the Light Vehicle Diesel Engines Test (A9). The new A9 test comes as a response to industry interest in having ASE provide a certification path for technicians working on light diesel engines. Many vehicle manufacturers have plans to incorporate diesel engines in existing production automobiles and light trucks in order to enhance their lineup. The first A9 tests were offered in the May 2009 ASE Test Administration.

We’ve been working on light duty diesel engines for years in pickups and (mostly European) sedans. Advances in diesel technology in the area of emissions and fuel economy, and the increase in fuel prices, have revived the interest for diesel engines in the passenger car market in a big way. Since ASE announced the new A9 test, I’ve received a number of calls asking how this affects the requirements for Master Auto status. The short answer is: it doesn’t. The A9 test will not be required in order for technicians to achieve Master status.

What the A9 test does do is cover automobiles and light trucks equipped with light duty diesel engines up through and including Class 3 (up to14,000 lbs GVW). The test has been developed with some of the best subject matter experts in the industry to outline the test content and write the test questions. The Task List (job skills) and test specifications encompass general areas of knowledge for the A9 test, and include:

* General Diagnosis
* Cylinder Head and Valve Train Diagnosis and Repair
* Engine Block Diagnosis and Repair
* Lubrication and Cooling System Diagnosis and Repair
* Air Induction and Exhaust Systems Diagnosis and Repair
* Fuel System Diagnosis and Repair

Initially, the A9 test will be offered only in the traditional written testing format that ASE offers in May and November. But, like the rest of the A-Series automobile technician certification tests, the A9 test will eventually be offered in the Computer-Based (CBT) testing format as well.

It has been about fifteen years since ASE has offered a new certification test for automobile/light truck technicians, the last being the Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) test introduced in 1994. Since light duty diesel technology shows the promise of a potentially broad application, particularly with existing vehicles and the expected expansion of the diesel automobile market by North American manufacturers, ASE is expanding the credentials offered to automobile technicians who desire professional recognition in this area of specialty.

2010 Automotive Service Professionals Week
Once again, ASE has declared June 7-13, 2010 as National Automotive Service Professionals Week. This year marks the fifth anniversary of NASPW, created to honor the commitment and dedication of automotive, truck and collision technicians, along with parts specialists and other support professionals who serve the motoring public. For 2010, ASE continues this recognition and has it listed in the 2010 Chase’s Calendar of Events.

Twenty-three states issued proclamations honoring National Automotive Service Professionals Week in 2009. We will once again push to have all fifty states recognize the outstanding work done by automotive professionals across the nation. If you are interested in helping promote NASPW, ASE will provide a form letter for local shop owners in each state to petition their respective Governors to mark this special week.

ASE created National Automotive Service Professionals Week to acknowledge the skill and dedication of the men and women who service and maintain the highly complex vehicles upon which we depend so much for our day-to-day transportation, and ASE is proud to help recognize these individuals for their commitment to their customers, their craft and the American economy.

Everybody knows that MD following an individual’s name means Medical Doctor. And most people know that CPA signifies Certified Public Accountant. Associations and professions use certification to recognize qualified and competent individuals. The certification process is one of the single most important steps in career development. Here are the top ten reasons an automotive professional should consider becoming ASE-certified.

Certification grants you professional credentials. Since it recognizes your individual accomplishments, ASE’s certification serves as an impartial, third-party endorsement of your knowledge and experience on a national, even international basis.

Certification demonstrates your commitment to the automotive service and repair profession. Receiving ASE certification shows your peers, supervisors and, in turn, the general public, your commitment to your chosen career and your ability to perform to set standards.

Certification enhances the profession’s image. ASE’s certification program seeks to grow, promote and develop certified professionals, who can stand “out in front” as examples of excellence in the automotive service and repair industry.

Certification reflects achievement. ASE certification is a reflection of personal achievement because the individual has displayed excellence in his or her field by meeting standards and requirements established by the entire automotive industry.

Certification builds self-esteem. ASE certification is a step toward defining yourself beyond a job description or academic degree while gaining a sense of personal satisfaction.

Certification can improve career opportunities and advancement. ASE certification can give you the “edge” when being considered for a promotion or other career opportunities. ASE certification clearly identifies you as an employee who has demonstrated competency in specific technical specialty areas based on accepted industry standards.

Certification may provide for greater earnings potential. Many automotive professionals who have become ASE certified experience salary and wage increases based on their certification status. ASE-certified professionals are in high demand throughout North America.

Certification improves skills and knowledge. Typically, achieving ASE certification requires training, study and “keeping up” with changing technology. ASE certification showcases your individual competence by confirming proficiency and knowledge.

Certification prepares you for greater on-the-job responsibilities. Since ASE certification is a clear indicator of your willingness to invest in your own professional development. Certified professionals are aware of the constantly changing technology and environment around their profession and possess the desire to anticipate and respond to change.

Certification offers greater recognition from peers. As an ASE-certified professional, you can expect increased recognition from your peers for taking that extra step in your professional development.

A message from ASE about what ASE is all about, how the tests are developed, the importance of ASE testing and certification and the significance of ASE credentials.

ASE was founded in 1972 and for the past 37 years has fulfilled its mission of providing certification credentials to automotive professionals in order to help raise the level of professionalism in the automotive industry and in the minds of consumers. In all that time, ASE has maintained the support of both OEM and aftermarket sides of the industry. ASE certification is widely recognized as the standard industry credential for technicians and other automotive service professionals, and is incorporated into many OEM manufacturer training programs and is strongly supported in the independent service shop community.

The ASE tests are written by working technicians and other subject matter experts from the repair industry. The individuals who attend ASE test-writing workshops are the heart of the ASE program and it is their knowledge and experience that ultimately determines the standards for technician knowledge that we measure by ASE testing. While the program may not be perfect, our research shows clearly that individuals holding ASE certification are more productive, more accurate in diagnosis and repair, have a greater first-fix success, get better performance reviews and even stay on the job longer—which translates into better job satisfaction.

There are nearly 400,000 automotive professionals who proudly hold ASE certification. Having the commitment to achieve certification says a lot about your dedication to your craft. Although customers usually don’t bring it up at the service desk, our research shows that they do recognize and appreciate the value of having an ASE certified technician work on their vehicle, and will look for those credentials when choosing their repair facility. For the past 37 years, ASE has been working to provide the best possible professional credentials for the automotive service industry, and in that time we like to think that we’ve made a difference. How about you? Are you ready to make a difference?

Few things can affect the success or failure of a shop more than the people on the front counter. It’s a proven fact that outstanding customer relations can easily overcome the worst work in the back, but the best work in the back can’t overcome a poor performance in the office.

90% of a shop’s problems are created at the front counter. Lack of clear communication skills alone can damage a shop’s efficiency and render it unprofitable. Repair orders like, “Car makes a noise”, or “Replace EGR valve” can set up the best tech for failure. All cars make noise—with the engine running…

Likewise, failure to reach a clear agreement with each customer over what’s to be done and how much it will cost can create unpleasant scenes at the end of the day.

It only makes good sense to have all front office people with customer contact take the C1 test. This will either establish you’ve got a great staff, or there’s more training to do. Few investments will pay off better than a little front office training. It translates immediately into money, either through increased sales or less time spent arguing with customers.

Don’t think the C1 test is a joke. Brent Swails was my Service Advisor and participated in 3 different multi-day sessions involving other Industry Experts who wrote the test questions. I know personally how much work and background went into the test. It’s the real deal, covering real issues.

The test will do 3 things—

First off, it will measure what your SA knows and highlight areas of strength.

Second, it will measure what they don’t and might explain problems you currently have that can be fixed.

Third, either studying for the test or simply taking it is a learning experience in itself. One good idea can be worth thousands if properly put into practice.

Certified Service Advisors are a critical component of a profitable, headache-free shop. So, take the test, already.

By George Witt. You probably also know him as Mr. Donut. He’s been an auto repair technician for over 30 years and now runs his own shop: George Witt Service. As AVI’s wackiest and most unique instructor, George is a regular at the AVI Training Conference and have taught several shop management and service marketing programs for AVI.

I have 15 years experience as an independent repair shop technician and have been a hotline adviser, field engineer, and technical trainer for a major automotive parts supplier for the past 20 years.

In the not so distant past those in the field of auto repair were called mechanics or even ‘grease monkeys’ by the motoring public. Those were days when all the technical information for servicing automobiles of that era could be contained in books totally around 5,000 pages. Thanks in large to electronic content on today’s vehicles the required amount of information necessary to repair today’s complex vehicles is close to 100 times what was required in the not so distant past. Today professionals in the business are afforded the title ‘technician.’ The most obvious sign to the motoring public that a service professional has elevated from mechanic status to technician are ASE credentials. ASE certification for electrical (A6) displays to vehicle owners that the technician working on their vehicle’s electronic / electrical systems possesses a firm understanding of the dozens of electronic modules, hundreds of connectors and close to a mile of wiring contained in today’s automobile.
